Well hello! And welcome to noc noc! If you are reading this...then you already know we have launched and the site works! (phew)
This journey really has been amazing, and I am so happy to be sharing the bespoke pieces of wooden toy art, that I have scoured the world to find.
noc noc evolved from a brainstorming session messily laid down in an A4 red Clairefontaine journal back in November 2014. A word map on page one, titled ‘Why Wood?’, provoked passion in me as to why the social ideals of consumerism needed to change. Our children and our planet deserved the best. The word Wood was placed in the centre of the page and scattered unevenly around this was environment, children’s health, natural, simple, aesthetics, and quality/longevity and finally love. I feel that this plastic world of instant consuming and quick to boredom throwaways must end. There must be less plastic waste, less plastic production to stop the endless flow of chemicals into this poisoned world. Now I have gone all hippie on you haven’t I? Well maybe there is something in the water up here in Lennox Head!
So my business brief was set! We would only stock handcrafted wooden toys. This seemed simple enough I naively thought, however after hours and hours of trawling the internet it became quite apparent that the toy artisans of the past have unfortunately been taken over by machines! Not all wooden toys were created equal. I sent email enquiry after email enquiry only to find out that the toys I was interested in were either not handmade, or if they were handmade they were not being done so on a large enough scale to be sold elsewhere. I was beginning to lose hope and started to envisage a new wood turning career path for my partner, when I received a gorgeous email from the creators of Teethertoys. Ticking the boxes we began: Yes they were handmade! Yes they were beautiful! Yes they were bespoke! To add to my excitement, and possibly more importantly than the rest, they were developed by an infant specialist. Oh, I almost forgot, just a teeny weeny little bit more exciting was that they were not yet being sold in Australia! We were off and racing, we had our first products. We have developed such a loving relationship with Cindy and her team in California, that we are ecstatically excited to announce that we are now the Australian/NZ wholesale distributors of this rapidly growing brand.
The next find was so beautiful and made me so excited that I was sure the answer from the amazingly talented artisans would be a resounding no. Goose Grease are based in Brooklyn, New York and are created by husband and wife team Juan and Anna Donado. When Anna wrote back to me explaining that yes they have expanded to sell wholesale and yes every piece is still lovingly hand crafted and hand painted, I can’t explain the excitement that grew inside me. These peg people make me feel like a little girl again. The beauty and creativity that each doll exudes take my breath away.
So I had found a baby product range and a range that suited boys and girls, but I knew that to suit those kids that liked to make ‘vroom vroom’ sounds around the house we really needed something with wheels. This has been such a hard search. From the bespoke bar the other two ranges had set we really need something uber special and I just wasn’t finding it. One night my partner, unable to sleep, trawled the internet for hours when he came across an image of the most amazing car. He kindly waited till dawn to wake me and show me his find. I promptly (and this is without coffee) made email contact with the designers and waited patiently (who am I kidding if there is one thing I am not it is patient!).
Four days later a response came, and I was stoked to read that this amazing brand were as particular about who stocked them as I was about whom I stocked. After a few back and forth email communications we were thrilled to be accepted and placed our first order. Now this was back in January and one of the attributes of handmade is that it is handmade! Designer Ken Como is hand making our order. I received an email from Kyoko his wife that the order will be completed next week and then we will wait for shipment from New York.
So my journey has taken me around the globe (virtually of course!) and I have met some amazingly talented people along the way. The thing that inspires me most about these people is that they are following their dream. They are hand-crafting pieces of art for our children to fall in love with. They are lovingly creating pieces that may stay in your families for generations. When I receive these pieces I do feel the love and I hope you do too.
Please read about our artisans to learn why we are so passionate about their products. I do hope you enjoy the store and please come back to visit regularly as we have a few surprises in store (pardon the pun)!
